The Heat--May 2, 2016

Ben:  Alright, let's plan this best Mother's Day call of all time!  First of all, is my time different than yours, or the same?  Right now it's 2:30.
Mom:  Same time.  Hi sweetie.  :)
Ben:  Hi mom.  How's life?  Did you see that pic of my clock I sent?  It's 127 degrees here!!!!  It's been that high all week.  It's so hot that Pres. Klein told all the missionaries on Sunday if they're fasting to just drink water.  He said it still counts.
And I got the birthday package from Grandma.  Only hers for now.

Mom:  Holy cow!!!!  That is SUPER HOT!!!  With humidity I can't even imagine!  Holy moly!!
Ben:  It's crazy.  So I think we're going to call you guys at 2 or something.  I'll go ask my comp.
Ben:  Alright, at 2:00 I will call you guys!!
Mom:  2:00 is fine, later is better because we have church, if that's possible.
Ben:  Maybe, but the guy bringing the laptop would be in a rough spot.
Mom:  2:00 is fine.  Can't wait.  Cannot wait.  Can't wait.  Let's not wait!
Ben:  I'm excited!!!!  It's going to be awesome!
Mom:  How's your week been?
Ben:
Pretty good.  Super hot, but not bad.  On Tuesday I got the package from Grandma.  It was a little awkward because I opened it in the zone meeting and the thing on top was a bunch of dolls (I'm assuming to give away to the kids.)  The took a moment of explaining!  haha!
There hasn't been a ton happening with our investigators.  The other 2 baptisms we had planned are starting to fade as far as attendance and spiritual drive, but we'll see.  We did find a really cool lady who wants to get baptized, she just needs to get married to the dude she lives with, who is actually an inactive member.  So we're going to work with them.  This could turn out to be my first wedding.  That would be really cool.
Mariela (got baptized last week) is the best person in the world. She always goes to church, she loves the gospel, and she understands everything. Not only the basic doctrine, but the deep down "why" stuff that half the members never even think about.  She is already trying to find a way to get to the temple.  AND WE HAVEN'T TAUGHT ABOUT THE TEMPLE YET!!  She's incredible.
My comp got sick on Sunday, so we ended up going to the house early, and I honestly thought I would have to carry him there.  We made it, but he collapsed into his bed.  The heat here definitely doesn't help.
We had a meeting with Pres. Klein, just the leaders of La Lima and their comps, so like 10 of us and president.  That was pretty crazy, because it was super involved.  We talked about goals and thinking in the future.  Pretty great.
What the heck?  Jared is going on a mission?  How long have I been out here?  That's so crazy, but super awesome.  I want someone from the stake to get called here, that would be super awesome.
Changes are next week.  I'm almost certain that my comp is going, but you never know.  So I'm assuming he'll go, and I'll have a  new comp next change.  That's kinda sad, he was a great comp.  But it's always good to shake things up.
I'm getting so tired of washing my own clothes.  I get it mom.  It sucks.  But washing it in a concrete washboard with water with leaves and worms swimming in it is even worse.  It's just a lot of work, and we don't really have time for it, but somehow, it gets done.  Not sure how.
This last week we totally ran out of money.  I'm not sure what happened, but we were living on scraps and like 15 cents at a time.  I ended up eating a lot of mangoes from the tree in our yard. But we got more money now.  It's funny going from poor as the people we visit to a rich person when we get more money.  It' s a little hard to budget, but I'm pretty good.   A lot of elders says I'm tacano--cheap.  But it's you ask me, that's a good thing!  :)
How is the Gozart clan in Idaho?
Mom:  Oh no!  That is terrible you ran out of money.  Can you use your debit card when you ran out to buy food?
Ben:  I can, but we didn't.  We just made things last.
Mom:  Ben, are you telling me you ran out of money for food????  Please don't tell me you were living on mangoes.  That breaks my heart!  Can't you start using your debit card from home if you need to?  Please don't be hungry!  We will buy you food!
And is Garnica feeling better today?  He sounds scary sick.
I'm sorry about the laundry!  I won't complain about it ever again, since I don't have to do it in a concrete tub with leaves and worms!  Mostly I just turn it on and then walk away.  I am feeling pretty guilty about that now.  :)
That's cool you got an extra meeting with Pres. Klein.  I know they are starting to do things for the last time.  Is Garnica the district leader?
Ben:  Yeah, Garnica is the DL.  It's pretty fun being the comp of the DL.  I call it the ADL--assistant to the District Leader!
We weren't so broke that we lived on of mangoes, but we snacked.  It wasn't that bad.  It was more of an experience than anything.  We did start a tab at the restaurant where we eat lunch.  How weird is that?!
Mom:  You're the ADL?!  That's hilarious!!  You're Dwight Shrute!!
I'm glad you weren't eating mangoes to survive.  I'm ok with you having an "experience" I guess.  I'm sure that's good for you.  But please don't starve!  :)
Lucky that you can run a tab!  That's funny--you would think they wouldn't let you do that cause they need the money too.
Ben:  It's how everything works here.  Pretty nice.  Everyone's kinda relaxed when it comes to money.  It's kinda weird.
Mom:  I've noticed a thing like that too--it seems like people without money are more relaxed and willing to share than people with money.  When Luke was in the hospital, the people with the least extra money themselves were the ones doing the most to try and help us.  I remember commenting on that at the hospital and someone said, "The rich take care of themselves.  The poor take care of each other."  Kinda profound.  Especially since I just read King Benjamin yesterday!
Ben:  That's awesome!  I'm going to write that quote down.
Mom:  I sent some pics from the other night.  Hannah and Sam both had plans so Caleb had to come on our date with us.  We went to dinner at Winger's.  Did you eat at one of those there?  I also sent some cartoons of Calvin and Hobbes and Star Wars mash ups.  I saw these and remembered how much you and Sam loved Calvin and Hobbes.
Ben:  Yeah, I ate at a Winger's, but it doesn't even resemble that place.  it was more of an indoors drive through.  One table to wait, and two lines of people.  That's it.  Those Calvin and Hobbes are the BEST.  It's awesome how recognizable his drawings are.
Sewed my shoe back together!
